Only late last year did Renault show real signs of recovering from its post-2005/06-title blues. Those blues lasted one and a half seasons, and had at their root a major change in design requirement following the enforced switch from Michelin to Bridgestone tyres.
For 2009 we again have a fundamental tyre change, as well as an aerodynamic one. In configuring the R29, has the team avoided the same pitfalls? If so, it can use its proven development ability to help Fernando Alonso fight for a title. If not, that development ability will again be squandered in overcoming the initial shortfall.
